Bioengineering is the freshly introduced major in Cambodia, and it also is one of the least popular majors to study in the university. What exactly is Bioengineering or biomedical engineering? BME or BioE is the application of the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering principles to define and solve problems in biology, medicine, health care, and other fields. It is a relatively new discipline that combines many aspects of traditional engineering fields such as chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Here are the 3 reasons why you should choose bioengineering:

1. It is versatile

As the name suggests, Bioengineering includes a lot of different fields. You can work in the medical field, food industry, and agriculture. In the medical field, you can actually create equipment using new technology (such as X-ray) to improve the medical world, or you can simply work with cells to find cures for diseases or to gain a better understanding of cells. In the food industry, you can work with bacteria to keep the canned food fresh, and it is closely related to chemical engineering. In agriculture, you can genetically modify (GM) crops to make them immune to heat as well as pesticides and increase productivity. What can you be when graduating from college? You can be a researcher, cell culture engineer, microbiologist, epidemiologist, food chemist, agriculturists, biotechnologist, genomic engineer, and so much more. In Cambodia, you can actually work in the food industry such as Coca Cola. So, what are you waiting for?

2. It is interesting

You can think outside the box to create something new, and there is no rules on how to do your work. Moreover, you get to work with life science on a molecular level, which means it is beyond cells. To spice things up, you are able to work with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) designing babies (Stem cell research), or cloning people and animals (therapeutic cloning or reproductive cloning). With this field, you will look at life beyond what we can see from our naked eyes, and start to use our creativity to solve real-life problems rooted inside our DNA. Maybe, you can be the one who finds a cure for cancer.

3. It helps people

This field is very helpful to the society. You can actually save someone’s lives by improving the medical standard with the cure for diseases and the understanding of biology. Moreover, you can help underprivileged people to obtain medication with the new finding of cheaper and more effective medicines. Additionally, in agriculture, you can increase the agricultural products in the country and thus, improving the economics as well as people’s lives.

What should you focus on when studying Bioengineering?

If you want to study bioengineer, you should focus on biology and chemistry when in high school. Also, you might want to self study microbiology, biocompatibility, biochemistry (genetic biochemistry), biotechnology, bioethics, mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, integration, and infinite series), general chemistry, organic chemistry, structural chemistry, general physics, electrical and electronic circuits, and laboratory and scientific methodology.

Where to study?

You can study Bioengineering at Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP)

What is the Career Opportunity?

As society is constantly evolving, the demands for bioengineer increase. Yet, we are losing such potential people because our society tends to think of STEM majors as unrealistic and unpractical. However, should you be in love with biology and engineer, why not major in biomedical engineer and prove everyone wrong? Remember that life is too short, so do the things you love, for one day you might look back and regret the things you didn’t do.
